The first thing to remember is that not all filters are built alike. Look on your camping water filter and check to see that it removes more than just sediment from your water. Secondly, if your water filter has a built-in iodine system, it will also kill viruses. This is a very good thing. However, make sure that the filter also has a carbon element in order to remove the iodine from the water when it is done with its job.

Price-wise, you really want to be looking at filters that are $50 and up. Anything cheaper than that and you are running the risk of not filtering out all the protozoa, bacteria, and other microbes that can make you sick. Don’t go cheap on this – you will regret it when you get nausea, are vomiting or get diarrhea.

With these basic rules, you ought to be good to go. There are even fancier filters such as a pre-filter, or that alter the taste of the water. Those features are best left to personal choice. A good pre-filter will extend the life of your water filter, but is not completely necessary. Just remember – it’s always better to be safe than sorry!
